ABSTRACT

The term ‘impacts’ refers to the short-term influence a sport facility has on a society, usually measured during the initial operations of the facility (first ten years). ‘Legacy’ has been used with increasing frequency in describing the long-term social impact sport facilities have on society. The concepts of impacts and legacies are often linked to the concept of sustainable sport and leisure development and are becoming vital components to measure the effectiveness of sport facility operations and management. This chapter will examine sustainability as part of managing and operating sport facilities across sport, recreation, leisure, and entertainment. This will range from sustainable infrastructure development to the evaluation of the long-term performance of sport facilities in terms of the triple bottom line of economic, social, and environmental impacts.
