ABSTRACT

The book is introduced through a wide global context, introducing the reader to a repositioning of the interior as a mediator and transmitter of spatial culture. The chapter helps positions interior design as a self-defining discipline and central component of the spatial arts. The chapter helps to frame the histories and context of the globe through the design sectors in the established regions of the Global North and the emergent practices and typologies in the Global South, fusing an international context for the discipline. The introduction outlines the contents and narrative of the book by highlighting key sections and the scope of the chapters. It outlines what is meant by global design culture and how the interior discipline fits into this and interconnects with the other design disciplines improving society and community. It introduces each of the chapters and outlines a professional practice narrative through a series of design case studies. This is supported by interviews and design perspectives from design professionals and academics. It highlights the regional and global motifs that position interior design practice as a powerful economic indicator and stimulant. It establishes a position for the interior as a symbiotic practice with architecture, showing how the interior typology and realm enriches society and the urban landscape globally.
