ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines some of the conditions and commonalities of the interior found in and across the selected cities. It offers some observations and commentary on the diversity of globalised interiors and offers some spatial analysis of the components of experience, developed through these interiors and cityscapes. One of the initial observations is how the interior is interpreted and represented as part of the city. Usually, the interior is not ‘seen’ as part of the cityscape. All the cities in this chapter must be considered when thinking about working in interior design. Cities are uniquely different, but essentially the same. It is their histories, design and location that power difference, influence and speciality. Climate and lighting also feature heavily in the analysis of the different interior spaces/cities. Working with natural light in an interior is a distinct skill of the designer. The interior resides within the architectural enclosure, supported and positioned to create experiences for the users.
