ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the relationship between interior design and the forming of national identities for design. It examines the differences in ornamentation, light and colour in selected regions as a way to demonstrate the impact of culture and national identity on the interior. As migration and populations become ever more diverse, specific cultural traits are changing and the interior is being used as a way to alter national identities and redefine cultural tectonics. Ornamentation is an integral part of the spatial culture. Interior ornamentation is a key feature of the discipline and, when applied to architecture, the main surfaces of the interior are often used to define the interior style and aesthetics. Interior lighting is the active use of light to practically and aesthetically illuminate an interior space. Colour and light are often used as a way to determine design styling. There are many examples of interior design which are imported from one country to another.
