ABSTRACT

The Scandinavian root of interior space was based around the Bauhaus traditions of craft, manufacture and truth to materials. The Swedish interior has a focus towards furniture and its spatial qualities and is used as a primary component in centralising the design. The interior must contribute to the quality of life and the protection of the planet, and how the design process can contribute is widely recognised. The traditional boundaries within which interior, architecture, graphic and industrial design agencies work are increasingly fluid and diverse. The influence of Swedish design on both the domestic and commercial world of interior design has been hugely influential and continues to develop in Sweden’s public city spaces. South African interior spaces feature traditional design tropes of undulating and uneven surface textures that actively contrast with plain flat walls. Colour populates the interior space that is both rich and deep, using darker tones to soften any exterior light.
