ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the aspects of spatial culture that help define and respond to the needs of a growing population. Interior design is an emergent discipline, often defining trends and movements of taste that help the spatial experience improve, but also adapt to the shifting sands of human culture. The relationship between the interior and architecture is fundamental to the development of global spatial experience and culture. The cultural relationships between the inside and outside of the building also influence how spatial culture and the narrative of space are entwined. The cultural regions of design have been developed largely through the establishment of population, economy, the urbanisation of cities and ongoing industrialisation. Several regions of the world recognise the importance of design culture and interior design as part of their ambitions to build better societies through the use of commercial design and the development of education.
