ABSTRACT

The practice of the club Disc jockey has shaped the style of house music, this has occurred within the limitations and new possibilities which electronic recording studio technologies can offer. This chapter describes some of the developments in music technologies with relevance to house music. The development of electronic musical instruments has been of major importance while from the late 80s onwards, computer technology has made a major impact. Samplers and computerised sequencers are standard equipment in any studio which produces dance music. Digital recording has enabled the increase of the possibility of cultural and generic cross-over as well as an increased speed in the time of reaction on different musical products. Initially this type of technology was developed by the end of the 70s in order to overcome the static noises and the distortions which troubled analogue recording methods.
