ABSTRACT

In addition to his criticism of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Trump also accuses the Chinese of “unfair business practices.” If there were truth in this accusation, one would expect to find the Chinese “cheating” (by using subsidies or currency manipulation to reduce China’s export prices) to maintain market shares. To test out this hypothesis, let’s turn the clock back to 2005 and look at over a decade (2005–2016) of Bangladeshi efforts to compete with China in the cut-throat global market industry.
