ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 is about injuries. This chapter describes what is going on with regards to specific injuries, how it impacts an athlete’s ability to train, how training may be modified in the presence of this injury, and the general approach that rehabilitation and treatment takes. The chapter describes injuries to the elbow joint, shoulder joint, lower back, hamstrings, knee, groin, shin splints, and ankle injuries. The chapter is also illustrated to assist the reader with understanding the injury described.

Injuries are a fact of life in athletics. Unlike the general fitness population, athletes may not be able to take time off from training and competition as a result of injury. This chapter is going to examine some of the more common injuries in athletics, discuss what is occurring as a result of these injuries, how they are treated, and cover how they can be trained around and rehabbed.
