ABSTRACT

Chapter 13 describes strength and conditioning needs for individuals with disabilities. This chapter covers intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, and cystic fibrosis. For each a description of the disability is given, considerations for the strength and conditioning professional, as well as program design recommendations.

To this point, this entire book has been written with a typical population in mind. Today strength and conditioning professionals are likely to encounter individuals with disabilities that are able to exercise. This chapter will provide some background information and recommendations when working with individuals with intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, and cystic fibrosis.
