ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 covers fundamental strength and conditioning techniques in the form of strength training exercises, sprinting techniques, agility, and implement techniques. The chapter explains how and why various exercises are performed and is extensively illustrated with photographs. Evidence-based discussions in this chapter include the relevance of the Olympic lifts for the conditioning of athletes, the safety of the squat exercise with regards to the knees, the effectiveness of core training, and the effectiveness of kettlebell training.

This chapter will cover the techniques that are fundamental to a number of exercise modes used in a strength and conditioning program. These modes will include strength training, sprinting, fundamental agility skills, core training, and implement exercises. The last part of this chapter will address some of our assumptions about these exercises.
