ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 describes the process of conducting a needs analysis prior to developing a strength and conditioning program. This is described in terms of analyzing the sport, analyzing the position, and analyzing the athlete. The chapter provides examples using athletes in two different sports of how this process can be done and how it can influence the training of the athlete.

The needs analysis refers to the process of analyzing the sport and the position that the athlete plays to determine how a strength and conditioning program should be focused to best prepare athletes to be successful. Once that analysis has been done, it is followed by assessing how well the athlete is prepared for the sport. An important process, the needs analysis forms the foundation of a good strength and conditioning program.
