ABSTRACT

This chapter draws attention to the enormous range of activities that can be classified as robbery, which can occur in homes and varied types of business premises as well as on the street. Important features of planned robbery from the robbers’ perspective, therefore, are ‘bottle’, terror, opposition to violence; escape considerations, avoidance of stubborn victims, not giving heroes the chance to function, the plan based upon located vulnerability and timing. Robbery involves a short-script and a low level of verbal skill, hence, to be successful in planned robbery, lethal means and high destructive potential, guns and knives in the hands of desperate men, must be immediately visible. There was a significant association between the carrying of weapons and low rates of contact or injury. A solo robber can apparently threaten as efficiently as a larger team. The general rate of contact exceeds that of threat.
