Capital punishment With gaps of some years capital punishment by hanging was used from before 1016 to 1964 for a wide variety of offences. The number of those executed is not known but at Tyburn tree (Marble Arch), one place of execution in use from 1177 to 1783, the minimum number executed is estimated to be 50,000 and from 1900 to 1949 in England and Wales only, 751 people were executed, of whom 87 were women.
