ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out how to make a success of working from home as well as discussing what facilities or equipment reader might need. Reliable access to a computer is of course a must, but for most freelances, this will not need to be an all singing, all dancing, top of the range piece of equipment. One of the most tedious and time-consuming aspects of journalism can be transcribing long interviews. There are apps that can do this for you to varying degrees of success, depending on factors such as accents and how technical the topic. Cafes with WiFi can be a useful way to get work done while still feeling part of the real world. When working for yourself, time management is key but even the most experienced freelances may not get this right all the time.
