ABSTRACT

Setting up a business may sound a little overwhelming, but in reality it is fairly simple and there are several options to choose from. The most straightforward route, especially for the freelance journalist just starting out, is to set up as a sole trader, also known as a sole proprietor. Negotiation is a key part of accepting a commission, and it should be at the forefront of your mind whether the commissioning editor has offered a fee or asked for your rate. Freelances are not tied to working in the country they live, which means they have to get to grips with international payments. Freelance journalists tend to accept a certain amount of late payment with a world-weary sigh. The authors would like to see more freelances taking a strict approach on timely payment, especially those experienced journalists with more clout who can set expectations for the profession.
