ABSTRACT
Chapter Three details a chronology of those accounts, beginning in the colonial era, one that describes the prohibition of the drum. The issues of slave revolts, communication, and phases of acculturation are considered here. Along with the observations of whites, contributors to the Slave Narrative Collection commented on the place of the drum in slave society. The Narratives reveal a variety of activities with which the drum is rarely associated.
