ABSTRACT

The interpretation of criteria obtained from the key Blue Book text constitutes the basis of the theory which has been developed. When assessing the theory of criteria it is important to consider the status of the discussions in the Blue Book. The theory which has been developed has plausibility as an interpretation of criteria and some non-exegetical interest. The concept of grammar played a central role in Wittgenstein’s philosophy. His employment of the word ‘grammar’ was complex and uncommon. The idea that criteria are a descendent of the hypothesis relation is one of the justifications of the view that the concept of a criterion is not purely grammatical in nature. The theory of criteria allows for divergences in the interpretation of his ideas on grammar in the sense that it is conceivable to adhere to the idea that it is purely grammatical in character without being committed to particular positions on aspects of his views on grammar.
