ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a syllabus that was written for a graduate elective course taught in the summer of 2017. The readings include: Plato, Symposium; Solomon, Song of Songs or, Canticle of Canticles; Augustine, Confessions, books VIII–X; Rumi, “If You Bake Bread With the Wheat”; Dante, La Vita Nuova; Teresa of Avila, The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila by Herself; and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, “Phyllis,” “My Divine Lysis,” “My Lady, I Approach and I Withdraw,” “Disillusionment,” “On the death of that most excellent lady, the Marquise de Mancera,” “You Men”. Some of the other readings are: Friedrich Nietzsche, The Birth of Tragedy; Anton Chekov, “Sleepy” or, “Let Me Sleep”; and W. E. B. Du Bois, The Souls of Black Folks.
