ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a syllabus that was written for the first class the author ever taught at UBC, in the fall term of 2014. This course is for performing a strategic and comparative reading between Paulo Freire’s classic book, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, selections from the work of Ivan Illich, and the tradition of Liberation Theology as promulgated by Gustavo Gutierrez in his own classic, A Theology of Liberation. The work of the course is heavily exegetical, consisting in thorough and focused readings of primary texts, with classes that consist of text-based discussions and occasional lectures to address contextual and thematic questions. In certain cases, questions can arise somewhat independently of the texts.
