ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a syllabus that is a living document (in the sense that the author updates it each term) that he uses for the supervision of masters and doctoral students at the University of British Columbia (UBC). The supervisory relationship is first and foremost an academic custom. The official customs of the supervisory relationship are outlined within the policies of the Department of Educational Studies, Faculty of Education, and Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (G+PS), enforced through the authority of UBC. The document is primarily intended for students for whom the author serves as sole supervisor. The document serves to prevent the necessary vagueness of the official policy from causing harm to the students I supervise. It disabuses the author's students of biases and invites them to a course of study that is hospitable to the arts and humanities without being hostile to the natural, applied, or social sciences.
