ABSTRACT

In this chapter, conceptions of intrinsic motivation and values for learning are explored, and strategies for promoting the development of these positive motivational outcomes in the classroom are provided. First, theoretical perspectives on intrinsic motivation are described. Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of flow, and self-determination theory’s description of the three psychological needs that underlie intrinsic motivation and its concepts of internalization and autonomous regulation are discussed. The next section provides an overview of expectancy-value theory’s perspective on task values and offers specific strategies for promoting students’ values for learning. A discussion of how teachers can incorporate values and goals to learn into their instructional planning also is included at the end of the chapter.
