ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the notion of motivation to learn is contrasted with other aspects of motivation described in earlier chapters, focusing on aspects of motivation reflected in active engagement and promoted by contextual supports. Specific strategies that have the potential to support students’ motivation to learn are offered. Strategies for teachers include ways to help students build motivated learning schemas through scaffolding appreciation for learning. Ideas for how teachers can socialize students’ motivation to learn by modeling, coaching and scaffolding also are described. Scaffolding techniques involve developing explicit learning goals for students, use of specific questioning techniques, teaching for conceptual change, and promoting meta-cognitive awareness and self-regulated learning.
