ABSTRACT

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the work on the Tolstoy Farm and the pleasant errands to the city. It was difficult to prevent the youngsters from playing pranks while engaged in work. The work before Mahatma Gandhi and his followers at the Farm was to keep the place a busy hive of industry, and thus to save expense. In the end the main aim was to make the families self-supporting. If this goal was achieved, then the struggle could be carried on with the Transvaal Government for an indefinite period. The use of shoes in a hot climate is harmful; therefore Gandhi and his followers determined to learn to make their own leather sandals. Another handicraft introduced was that of carpentry. Having founded a sort of village at Tolstoy Farm they needed all manner of things large and small, from benches to boxes, and they made all those themselves. Unselfish carpenters helped them for several months.
