ABSTRACT

Isometric strength assessments involve the measurement of force production during a pushing or pulling task in a fixed position. These assessments are used to measure force–time characteristics at particular body positions. This chapter takes a deeper look at common methods for isometric assessment of strength. Tests such as the isometric mid-thigh pull, isometric squat, isometric bench, isometric dynamometry and grip strength testing are covered. Methods for these commonly used tests and measured variables, including the relevant research, are discussed. Particular attention is paid to aspects that can increase the standardisation and utility of isometric testing, including the reliability and validity of the different assessments.
