ABSTRACT

Eccentric strength is an important physical capacity that has a strong relationships with athlete performance characteristics such as change of direction ability and speed. Eccentric strength also has been shown to have a role with injury prevention and functional status in older adults. This chapter overviews the different methods used to assess eccentric strength. While less commonly used than other strength-testing methods, eccentric strength can be measured reliably and provide useful information for practitioners. Assessment methods utilising isoinertial and isokinetic protocols are presented, along with the different variables which can be measured. Readers are provided with specific methods and supporting research on how these tests can be conducted in practice.
