ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an analysis of the development of Indian states based on our implementation of the conceptualization of development building up on Stiglitz et al. It analyses the results on the eight dimensions of development, organized according to the three broad sub-categories of human development, security and voice and confidence. Two large states, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, ranking in the top ten in material prosperity perform abysmally poorly in health. The BIMARU states perform poorly in personal security and economic security but not so poorly in environment – Chattisgarh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh featuring among the top 10 in the latter list. A value around zero implies that the state is better than other states in as many indicators as it is worse than other states, suggesting it to be a median state in a sense. Arunachal Pradesh is an average performing state with an overall rank of 19.
