ABSTRACT

Having presented an extensive overview of the broad themes which characterize Africa’s development and its place in the world, in the chapter attempts to synthesize what they have learned and consider some possible future trends and scenarios. There has been much debate about why similar countries with broadly comparable resource and environmental endowments have achieved very different development outcomes. While Africa has experienced some of the fastest economic growth rates in the world over recent decades, with a growing international role and associated social and economic progress, some analysts warn against over-generalizing across the whole continent and express the need for caution about what is actually driving the ‘Africa Rising’ narrative. Going forward, Africa will certainly face a number of development challenges which will require both continental and global commitment to address. Agenda 2063 lays a good basis to face the future, but it will clearly need enhanced levels of commitment and support to achieve its goals.
