ABSTRACT
“Gen X Butoh” features highly visible artists from the next generation of Americans, two of whom launched large-scale butoh festivals: Espartaco Martínez, Eugenia Vargas, Shinichi Iova-Koga/inkBoat, Crow and Joshua Kohl/Degenerate Art Ensemble, and Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya/CAVE/LEIMAY. Several of these artists no longer refer to their work as butoh, but all acknowledge the profound impact their engagement with Japanese butoh artists has had on their work.
