ABSTRACT

In the workstation students could practice finding sets of the same number in a line array, circle and scattered. Most workstation activities start at about level six. Competent counting requires mastery of a symbolic system, facility with a complicated set of procedures that require pointing at objects and designating them with symbols, and understanding that some aspects of counting are merely conventional, while others lie at the heart of its mathematical usefulness. For instance, at one level students might only be counting out a given set whereas in another they might be producing a set. This is so different from what usually goes on in a kindergarten classroom where they have counting jars but everyone is working on the same set of counting jars. Sometimes, there is an attempt to differentiate by having different amounts to count, which is very important but not complete.
