ABSTRACT

Levelling Place Value workstations is framed around the idea that students should be solidifying the standards from the grade before as they are learning their new grade level standards. Students should be reviewing the place value concepts and skills from prior grades. Place value is not only a unit of study but also one of the four must-have workstations that stay up throughout the year. Second grade place value is fundamental to learning math. Students need a variety of experiences working with manipulative to build conceptual understanding of place value. The next level is the second grade place value addition and subtraction standards. Second graders should start by reviewing the first grade place value standard of adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number. The development of place value in kindergarten is a foundational domain. Many of the workstations are done as whole class routines in the beginning and then transitioned into workstations later on.
