ABSTRACT

There’s a scene in the movie As Good as it Gets where Melvin (the Jack Nicholson character) insults Carol (the Helen Hunt character) by ridiculing the dress she wore to the restaurant. Carol threatens to leave the restaurant unless Melvin pays her a compliment. After much consternation, he finally says, “You make me want to be a better man.” As Carol melts in her chair, she responds, “That may be the best compliment of my life.” That is one of my all-time favorite movie lines. It speaks to the potential we all have to bring out the best in other people.
