Instrumental to Jazz book
The acceptance of jazz into academic historical accounts is somewhat recent, but the inclusion of women in academic narratives is in its infancy; some of women’s greatest achievements have been ignored in written narrative and discographies. This chapter tells often-forgotten stories of women who participated as instrumental jazz performers and composer/arrangers, and also acknowledges the struggles that sometimes remain for women who wish to participate. From ragtime and swing to bop and West Coast styles, the chapter presents a diverse array of jazz arranged and performed by women. Works and performances of May Aufderheide, Lil Hardin Armstrong, Mary Lou Williams, Clora Bryant, Melba Liston, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Carla Bley, and DIVA are discussed.
