ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 examines the power of perspective, documentation, and publication in the shaping of cultural beliefs regarding women’s roles in music. Along with introducing basic music terminology and formats that will be used throughout the text, the chapter also introduces a culturally based model that explains the role of perspective in determining what is deemed “worthy” of historical preservation. Included in the discussion is an introduction to intersectionality and feminism. Using the art music of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Florence B. Price, and Pauline Oliveros, as well as popular music by Beyoncé and big band swing by the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, students work through experiential exercises that allow them to connect music with context.
