ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the considerations that should be made when measuring the useable set-up space of the room. The set-up we choose depends on the strengths and weaknesses of our ensemble. Questions such as how many players are within each section relative to the rest of the ensemble and what is the caliber of each player in each section need to be considered. This chapter presents several principles which are useful when designing a set-up. These include proximity effects volume, proximity of players within a section affects their ability to hear each other, and proximity of sections within the ensemble affects their ability to hear each other. A common set-up for orchestral strings places them, from the conductor’s left to right: violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, with double basses behind the celli.
