ABSTRACT

Make parent contact positive and productive by approaching the conversation compassionately, professionally, and logically. With email supplanting written mail and phone as the primary means for business communication, it is important to maintain high writing standards and professionalism. It is important to communicate information to parents quickly and efficiently. The student handbook is an important resource for students and parents to learn about all aspects of the music program. Printed versions of the handbook should contain the most essential information, including: mission and philosophy statement, classroom rules and procedures, grading policy, attendance policy, calendar of events, required supplies and materials, director’s school contact information, ensemble and course descriptions (e.g., orchestra, marching band, pep band, concert band, chamber ensembles, jazz band, pit orchestra), concert attire, home practice requirements and information about instrument, equipment, and music care.
