ABSTRACT

Certain religious groups have worn a distinctive type of clothing that has become almost a uniform. There is an obvious possibility that school rules may clash with religious practices when it comes to appearance and clothing. Many Buddhists will adopt Western dress styles for most of the time, possibly wearing traditional styles on communal occasions at the temple. The lay-community of Christians today generally do not wear distinctive clothing. There are often special clothes worn by lay-Christians if they are choristers, or involved in rites of passage such as a christening, baptism, confirmation or marriage. Hindus on occasions may wear jewellery or medallions depicting the wearer’s own personal deity, or an amulet which may have been chosen and blessed by the priest or guru. Islam encourages simplicity and modesty. Men keep themselves covered from the navel to the knees. The principle of modesty of dress may be found within the Jewish tradition.
