ABSTRACT

The celebration of festivals helps reflect the community life of a school which over a period of time embraces the different members of the school community rather than leaving certain children on the outside. This chapter includes the charts on religious festivals for each of the Faiths. The religious or festival Hindu calendar is a luni/solar one. The Buddhist year is based on the solar calendar, as in the West. The Christian calendar traditionally has revolved around the birth date of its founder, Jesus Christ. The Muslim calendar reflects the escape or flight of the Prophet Muhammad from Makkah to Madinah in the year Christians date as 622. The Jewish calendar, based on the phases of the moon, dates back to the year of the Creation of the world recorded in the Torah. The Sikh dating system, called Bikkarmi Sammat, is a lunar one, but employs as the base year, the year ‘0’ in the Christian Era of dating.
