ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on one example of what may be termed, a non-theistic stance for living, and on one example of a Christian sect. Humanism is an important example of a non-theistic stance for living. Non-theistic is a term applied to a religion, or approach to life style, that does not include a deity, but which displays many other aspects of religion that are readily identifiable. In the classroom Humanists welcome an openness being extended not only to other Faiths but also to the non-theistic stances for living. Whilst school termly patterns are totally linked to the calendar of festivals within the UK, Witnesses object to the celebration of these because in many instances they reflect non-Christian origins. The fact that they have been ‘Christianised’ is insufficient, and Witnesses withdraw totally from their celebration. Within Humanism there is a great breadth of thought and practice, as there is within any of the world’s Faiths.
