ABSTRACT

The intelligentsia of the Muslim community especially those who have been educated or are living in the Western world, attach great importance to the education of their daughters. To balance this education, which is often secular, great attention is also paid to religious education at home and in the mosque. Parents and religious authorities in every community, including the Christian, agree that, owing to the change in society, the moral standards in schools are much lower than twenty years ago. Therefore, the Muslim community feels that, whatever inspiration the Muslim home gives the child, the atmosphere at the school and other establishments will contradict it. There are many fundamental problems which Muslims face when sending their children to school in Britain, such as the uniform, food, leave for Muslim holidays, and physical education. Most of these problems could easily be solved if Muslim parents were made aware of their rights under the 1944 Education Act.
