ABSTRACT

What causes anxiety disorders? This is a complex question that is addressed in this chapter. What is the relationship between genetics and the environment in the cause of anxiety? There can be a genetic predisposition and environmental stressors such as trauma or a family situation. Specific types of stress can trigger anxiety. There have been studies regarding temperament and the chemistry of the brain. This chapter also discusses additional factors such as gender and poverty. The chapter provides effective interventions for educators and creative activities for use in the classroom to help students recognize the successes in their lives, as well as strengthen decision-making skills.
