ABSTRACT

A circular table may be used with effect, and if a table is made to revolve a series of operators may sit and gather the sheets as they pass. Economy of time is affected by using both sides of a table, so that on the return journey a second book can be gathered; this is more usual when more than one operator is at work on the same series of sheets. In some books the printer will put a small black mark on each sheet to appear on the edge of the outside fold, and on each successive sheet the mark is placed at a regular distance the preceding one, giving a diagonal line across the back of the book when gathered. The next form of book to be considered for pulling is the cloth-cased book, so favoured by English and American publishers.
