ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces our Planned Lethal Violence Threat Management Model, which is comprised of a three-stage process: 1) identifying the threat, 2) assessing the threat, and 3) engaging the threat. This chapter also presents an in-depth examination of the identification stage of our Active Killer Threat Management and Resolution Model. Identification refers to the accurate detection of direct behaviors of planned lethal violence through observation, hearing, reading, or other means. Conducting behavioral analysis requires establishing the baseline or anomalous behaviors of an individual, as well as determining whether behaviors are consistent and congruent – i.e., in-context and non-concerning versus inconsistent and incongruent – “out-of-context” and “concerning” are behaviors that are most accurately detected by people who have a close relationship with the individual.
