ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the unquestioned assumptions of the Imposing Blanket Solutions paradigm and the Problem Solving for Complexity paradigm. During the development of the Transformational Leadership Program, it provides a list of leadership behaviors across companies in a wide range of industries. There are two basic ways to think about the assumptions that underlie leadership focus. First, where leaders focus their attention is more oriented to either the means or the results. Second, leaders define purpose and then pay attention to achieving that purpose. Leaders working in the Imposing Blanket Solutions paradigm typically have objectives that are overlapping or conflicting rather than aligned to a clear purpose. For organizations in a Problem Solving for Complexity paradigm, leaders demonstrate clarity of purpose focused on serving value to the customer, encouraging employees to actively engage in improving the means by which to deliver value.
