ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the unique realities of families of color. An overview of the ethno-racial socialization process for caregivers and its impact on caregiver-child discussions of racially traumatic experiences will be provided. The chapter will also highlight the systemic impact of racial trauma on families of color. The reality of “the talk” that many caregivers have with their children will be explored with a special focus on the need for preemptive and reactive talks when faced with racially traumatic experiences, both personally and in the community. Lastly, this chapter will provide a guide for how school-based professionals can help facilitate and guide these discussions with families.
