ABSTRACT

As we know, children often do not use words to explain traumatic experiences regarding race and ethnicity or process the confusion, guilt, and shame that accompany those experiences. This chapter will provide an overview of the use of play therapy in treatment and the benefits of using a play-based approach with traumatized children. Specific guidance for how to implement play therapy in the school setting, materials needed, and important therapeutic skills will be provided. Additionally, the chapter highlights several practical examples of play and art-based techniques that mental health professionals can use when addressing racial trauma.
