ABSTRACT

This chapter will highlight the important concepts related to the experience of children of color in the school system. There will be an emphasis on the ways that school environments contribute to and exacerbate feelings of racial trauma in students. Important topics such as the overrepresentation of children of color in special education, teacher stereotypes, stereotype threat, microaggressions, and the school-to-prison pipeline will be discussed. A case study will also be provided throughout the chapter to connect the topics discussed with examples of how they may manifest in a clinical context.
