ABSTRACT

Pixels, each of which can show red, green, or blue, are lit up on a screen at varying levels of brightness, and those colors combine to create the rich tapestry of colors that we see in video imagery. The trick is that human vision adapts quite quickly to misbalances in color temperature. Looking at the sample image, one side neutral, the other side with the color balance “incorrect,” one can see that the colors in the shirt are misrepresented and provide less useful information on the misbalanced side. One of the most powerful tools colorist have is another phenomenon of complementary colors: putting them against each other makes each appear to be more saturated. One very common technique is to push the highlights and the midtones or shadows to complementary positions of the color wheel.
