ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the unequal gender balance in the early years workforce and the lack of male early years practitioners; considers how it has come about and what issues contribute to this situation both in the UK and beyond. It reflects on some of the new and emerging evidence around this issue as policymakers’ growing interest and concern becomes apparent. The chapter also considers why some discourses about Early Years are seen as more truthful than others and how this relates both to questions of power and the reinforcing of stereotypes, particularly around the issue of work that is suitable for women and work that is suitable for men.
