ABSTRACT
The United States of America is one of the largest countries in the world with a relatively free press standing 48th in the Reporters Sans Frontieres annual ranking. RSF is critical of the continuing decline of press freedom, with President Donald Trump leading attacks on journalists whom he describes as an “enemy of the American People” that have encouraged others to copy. The developing concerns of the public for protection of their privacy largely mirror those of the UK, with some US citizens, perhaps, being more concerned about privacy invasions by their government than those in the UK. Canada lies somewhere between the US and the UK when it comes to media privacy. Like many Commonwealth countries it takes its lead in legal terms from its British colonial past structuring its legal system and common law on Anglo-Saxon norms, strengthened by its connections to the US.
